Warner Pacific University is pleased to share continued growth and leadership momentum within its School of Nursing, reflecting the University’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and preparing compassionate healthcare professionals who serve with purpose.

New Dean of Nursing: Andrea Thompson, MSN, RN

This summer, Warner Pacific University appointed Andrea Thompson, MSN, RN, as Dean of the School of Nursing. Formerly the Associate Dean, Dean Thompson brings 16 years of clinical nursing experience, including extensive work in medical-surgical nursing and labor and delivery, along with more than 13 years in nursing education.

Her leadership is rooted in bridging theory and real-world practice, helping students develop both technical competence and compassionate care. Currently completing her PhD dissertation, Dean Thompson continues to advance nursing science while preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Before entering nursing, she was a professional ballet dancer, a background that instilled discipline, resilience, and an appreciation for the art of precision. These qualities continue to inform her work in both the classroom and the clinical environment, shaping a leadership approach grounded in excellence, empathy, and lifelong learning.

Interim Associate Dean: Dr. Katie Ketterling-Thornburg

The University also welcomed Dr. Katie Ketterling-Thornburg, DNP, as Interim Associate Dean. Dr. Ketterling-Thornburg earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Montana State University and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Frontier Nursing University.

She brings eight years of nursing experience in maternal-child health and six years of practice as a nurse practitioner. Her student-centered leadership style emphasizes compassion, balance, and excellence, values she lives out as both an educator and a mother.

New Staff Members Strengthen Clinical Education

The School of Nursing has expanded its leadership and support team with key staff additions that enhance academic operations and clinical training:

  • Lesley Ibarra, Program Manager, oversees clinical placements across eight courses, manages affiliation agreements with clinical partners, ensures compliance and accreditation readiness, and coordinates licensure preparation.

  • Katie Williams, RN, a proud Warner Pacific alumna, serves as Simulation and Program Coordinator, managing lab and simulation learning environments, supporting clinical operations, and coordinating student events such as orientations and pinning ceremonies.

Together, these roles play a critical part in supporting student success and the School’s continued growth.

Faculty Addition: Jessica Sandstrom

The School of Nursing also welcomed Jessica Sandstrom as a faculty member, further strengthening the program’s academic and clinical foundation. Jessica joined Warner Pacific University’s nursing faculty in 2019 and brings 17 years of nursing experience, including work in Level I trauma care, along with six years in nursing education.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Washington State University, an MS in Organizational Leadership and Healthcare Administration from the University of Providence, and an MS in Nursing Education in 2023. Jessica currently practices in Interventional Radiology at OHSU, bringing current clinical expertise and real-world insight into the classroom.
