With students gone on summer break, the WPU campus hosts numerous organizations throughout the Portland community. This summer in particular, the Hispanic Basketball Mix League has been hosting tournaments almost every weekend in the C.C. Perry Gym.

The Hispanic Basketball Mix League was founded in 2011 by Crisoforo Rodriguez. In the beginning, the organization hosted league tournaments that were held at Reynolds Middle School. The program found success and grew to include 48 different teams. However, when the pandemic hit, they decided to put a halt to running the league. The league paused for over two years until Crisoforo’s sons, Alex and Cris Rodriguez, decided to start the organization back up again.

“We are blessed to partner with Warner Pacific who gave us the opportunity to bring back our community league,” said Alex Rodriguez.

Currently, they have about 20 teams and schedule tournaments every weekend throughout the year. The leagues currently consist of men and women’s divisions, and they are starting to bring back a youth league again. Alex stated that the leagues are “a family event” and a great way to bring people together, especially after the pandemic.

“Our favorite part is the love of the game and seeing the community grow,” Alex said. “It’s so much fun having families attend to support their team and seeing the smiles and joy that it brings everyone.”
