This month we are highlighting a student who has found great success through her education at Warner Pacific University. Kathy Nguyen is a graduate of the class of ’22 and is a current Professional & Graduate Studies student earning her Masters in Organizational Leadership. This Q&A aims to shed light on Kathy’s accomplishments, provide insights into her WPU journey, and inspire others.

What has your higher education journey looked like?
My journey through higher education has taken me on a path that wasn’t planned. In the middle of my junior year as an undergraduate, the college I was attending closed unexpectedly. Warner Pacific University opened its doors to me and has allowed me to flourish both academically and in my professional life.

What did you study at Warner Pacific University?
I enrolled in the Healthcare Administration (HCA) program, and Dr. Neiworth (my then advisor and professor) walked me through the steps of my graduation requirements. I worked closely with every one of my professors and peers in the HCA program to complete each course. The HCA professors are knowledgeable and ready to help prepare their students for work after graduation.

Who was your biggest influence during your time at Warner Pacific?
During my senior year, I also had other core courses which allowed me to be a student of Dr. Ulf Spears, Interim Dean of Business. Through him, I learned quality skills that prepared me for my future, and most importantly, accomplishing the goals that I set for myself. Dr. Spears graciously set me up for success and had a job lined up for me immediately after graduation. I recently was given the opportunity to attend an industry national leadership conference.

What endeavors have you undertaken subsequent to your graduation?
I am now a graduate student in the WPU Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program. Dr. Spears encouraged me to think about graduate school while finishing my undergraduate degree. This program has expanded my confidence to think critically and be resourceful with materials that I am learning as it relates to today’s trends in business and workplace. Graduate school is not easy, but I am grateful for each professor. I have built quality, lifelong friendships with classmates like Paul and Holly.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Working full-time and being a full-time graduate student definitely keeps me busy, but the combination of support from professors, peers, work, and loved ones makes it possible for me to wake up every day feeling motivated. My professional journey is constantly expanding, and each experience holds value to me as I grow.

What are you most proud of in your journey through higher education?
I am a first-generation college graduate. I am blessed, proud, and grateful to be part of a university that offers opportunities to pave the way for my future. Warner’s positive academic experiences are a part of my past, present, and future.
