Warner Pacific College Director of Athletics Jamie Joss announced David Kilian, former Sam Barlow High School head boys and girls track & field coach, has been named head coach for the cross country and track & field programs. Kilian replaces Dave Lee, who resigned after 13 seasons.
“David was a top candidate from the beginning and his passion for becoming a college head coach was evident during the interview process,” said Joss. “His success at the high school level speaks for itself, as he put together a nationally-recognized program. His coaching and mentoring student-athletes to excel both on and off the track are a great fit for us.”
His teams at Sam Barlow have enjoyed tremendous success. The Bruin girls team has won three straight Mt. Hood Conference Championships and finished runner-up at the 2013 6A OSAA Championship meet, while the boys squad won four consecutive conference championships (2009-12), and finished runner-up twice at the OSAA’s. His student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom, consistently ranking in the top 10 in Oregon for team GPA.
“We worked very hard to impress upon our current student-athletes that we were committed as an athletic program and a College, to bring in a great coach who is going to build upon the foundation set by Coach Lee,” Joss added. “We certainly feel that coach Kilian is prepared to lead the cross country and track programs to new heights.”
During his time at Barlow HS, Kilian was named Mt. Hood Conference Boys Coach of the Year twice (2009, 2011), and Girls Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013. His prior coaching experience includes stints as an assistant coach at Reynolds High School (2004-08) and North Marion High School (2002-04).
“It’s a blessing to have this opportunity to rebrand and grow the program at Warner Pacific,” said Kilian. “I am excited to meet the team and begin this journey together.”
Kilian earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 2002, and Masters in Teaching in 2003 from George Fox University.
Kilian and his wife Nicole, have two sons – Liam (5) and Isaiah (6 months).
