The Office of Service-Learning works with students, faculty and community partners in service that benefits the city of Portland. Through extracurricular programs, service events and academic service-learning, the staff strives to prepare students for lives of active service in our ever-changing and challenging world.
The mission of the Service-Learning Office is to connect students to the surrounding community in preparation for lives of leadership and public service. We work to build strong community relationships, intentionally seeking out projects that benefit of our partners while simultaneously fulfilling needs within the community. We endeavor to fuse intellectual thought and personal faith into acts of social justice, whereby students become more aware of social concerns and of the responsibility to those as urban and global citizens.
Service at Warner Pacific College is work that is done to the benefit of those who are within personal proximity or experiencing poverty in some way, with a priority for those individuals meeting both. This philosophy is rooted within the Judeo-Christian tradition, and the command given by Christ to love one’s neighbor and to care for the least in our society. Students are introduced to meaningful civic engagement and encouraged to explore compassion by getting involved in the lives of others.
Examples of service include: 1) participating in school-sponsored service activities (Common Day of Service, Hot Chocolate Ministry, Alternative Spring Break), 2) volunteering for a local non-profit, 3) helping an elderly neighbor with yard work and 4) integrating an internship or class project.
