Recent Faculty Accomplishments
At the conclusion of each academic year, the faculty prepare updates for the Board of Trustees as to their scholarly work. The following is an edited version of the Board report. Let’s celebrate the fine work that our faculty members have accomplished this year.
Professor Steve Arndt has published the fifth book in his Oregon: The Roads Less Traveled series. This book covers the roads less traveled in Northeast Oregon. Arndt also taught teaching methodology to 45 in-service teachers in Honduras over the Christmas break. His book, Curriculum Planning: the Role of the Teacher, was translated into Spanish by the Department of Education in Honduras. Follow up visits are planned this May and again in December to continue training teachers to be more effective in this impoverished country.
Professor Terry Baker gave a paper at a Calvin College as part of a conference, Teaching, Learning, and Christian Practices, hosted by the Kuyers Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning. Professor Baker is also working on workshop material for a retreat on pedagogy and postmodernity for Christian Educators in Oregon in conjunction with the Presbyterian Church.
Professor Robert Campy had an article titled “EMG Torque Relationship and Reliability of the Medial and Lateral Hamstring Muscles” published in the prestigious journal Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise (MSSE) in their November 2009 edition. He also reviewed an article for publication at the request of the Journal of Physiotherapy.
Dr. John Fazio continues to supervise the internal reporting of the College’s descriptive data. He also reports externally the College’s data to the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). In addition he completes ACT Undergraduate and Graduate Survey, The College Board Survey, and the CCCU Retention and Graduation Rates Survey, among others. He also continues to serve as a volunteer with the Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) of Portland and Vancouver.
Associate professor Bill Flechtner, co-facilitated day-long mentoring forums for teachers at national educational conferences in Portland and in Washington DC. Flechtner is also co-organizing a regional conference on Co-Teaching that will bring presenters from St. Cloud State University to present their program to several teacher education institutions from throughout Oregon. This conference will be held August 18-19, 2010.
Ruth Knott is an Assistant Professor and Academic Counselor in Warner Pacific’s Adult Degree Program. Born out of her own experience as the mom of a son with autism and as a professional counselor and Associated Certified Coach, Ruth’s book Coach Yourself through the Autism Spectrum was published in August 2009 (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, London and Philadelphia).
Professor Susanna Lundgren serves as church cantor for St. John Baptist Catholic Church, Milwaukie and was choir director for Christmas ‘09 and Easter ‘10 services. Among her 2009-10 projects: Singer and artist/designer for Sacred Dance Series at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, NW Portland; Contributor for Friends of Milwaukie Ledding Library, Art Curator for Poetry Series and Featured Artist at the Pond House Jan-Feb 2010.
Dr. Roger Martin is continuing his research on leadership using the Congruent Model of organizational analysis. He presented at the Faith and Scholarship series April 13 on the topic of Congruency and the Civil War: Lessons in Modern Organizational Behavior. He is working with Dr. Lou Foltz on publishing a paper entitled “Economics of Spiritual Management.” This year Dr. Martin took a team of students to San Francisco to compete at the SIFE regional conference and brought back two trophies: Rookie of the Year and 1st Runner Up to nationals.
Professor Phyllis Michael continues her involvement with a training project for marriage and family therapists and family life educators through churches in the People’s Republic of China. She has been writing several courses this year, including: A Christian Perspective on Divorce and Remarriage; Family Resource Management; Writing Curriculum: A Skills Training Workshop. She will be traveling to Shenyang May 18-June 2 to teach five courses. This is the second year of the second cohort of this program, funded by grants and individual contributions.
Dr. Connie Phillips is serving as faculty advisor for Knight Times, a bimonthly newsmagazine initiated this year. The publication is supported by student government and implemented as part of journalism coursework taught by Dr. Phillips. The publication was developed in a fall semester class—Copyediting and Publication Design—and three issues have been published since December, 2009.
Dr. Dennis Plies was a part of two new CDs, playing vibraphone on the album of Megan Enos for two tunes and playing marimba on one piece with Ruth Ann Yerden on her album. Also, Dennis with Ruth performed a marimba-piano concert at Holladay Park Church of God on October 4. Dennis continues writing his book, the title yet to be discovered. At the moment it could be, Relationships: Faith, Improvisation and Dialogue.
Dr. Pamela Plimpton presented her paper, “What’s so funny about the Gothic” at at the national conference of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies in Albuquerque,New Mexico, March 20, 2010. Finally, Dr. Plimpton co-chaperoned with Drama coach, Micah Montague a group of students involved in the Drama program to New York City for the purpose of seeing Broadway shows and meeting with Warner Pacific College alumni.
Gale Roid, Ph.D. organized a symposium presentation at the American Psychological Association, in San Diego, Calif., August 15, 2010, entitled, “Continuous parameter estimation and continuous norming of tests.” Dr. Roid and his wife are volunteer leaders in the college and young-adult ministry at their church in Vancouver, Wash.
Dr. Caleb Rosado, Professor and Director of the Urban Studies Program was featured in the lead article of the El Hispanic News, February 25, 2010. The article was published in both Spanish and English. Dr. Rosado also gave a workshop at the César e. Chávez Latino Student Leadership Conference at Western Oregon University, March 12. and a made a presentation at the Christians on Diversity in the Academy Annual National Conference sponsored by Azusa Pacific University, March 24-26, 2010.
